A republication of an essay which first appeared in Collectenea in 1896, with notes by James Mosley. The Republication coincided with the 150th anniversary of the death of Lord Stanhope and the 50th anniversary of the death of its author, Horace Hart, one time Printer to the University of Oxford. Stanhope, an eccentric politician, was also a serial inventor who, in the early 1800s developed a ‘secret process’ for stereotyping and a iron printing press and the Oxford University Press was the principle vehicle in adopting the technologies he developed.
