British Barracks, 1600-1914

First edition, first impression.  xviii, 224pp, with plentiful monochrome maps, plans and illustrations in text.  Black cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine.  4to.  There’s a cancelled bookplate on the front paste down else volume is neat, clean, bright and tight throughout.  In its original unclipped dust jacket,  somewhat shelf worn, gently bumped on extreme edges, with a small chip on the front panel. 

Barracks comprise an important but neglected part of the nation’s social, political and military history.  This authoritative book, the result of new research by English Heritage, establishes the historical important of these buildings, indicating that many have significance beyond their specific purpose and superficially unremarkable appearance, and provides examples of the living and working conditions experienced by British soldiers from around 1600 onwards.
