Dunwich, in Suffolk, waws the capital of the kingdom of the East Angles in Anglo-Saxon times. At its height it was an international sea port similar in size to 14th century London, but the decline began in the 13th century when a storm surge hit the East Anglian coast: that, together with further storms and coastal erosion have since reduced Dunwich to a village with the population of around 200.
