Undated but circa 1930 20pp hard cover album in brown textured cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and a vignette of Charles Dickens on the upper panel. Album contains 49 of a set of 50 images of places associated with Charles Dickens and his novels mounted on stiff green card leaves, with commentary. 8vo. Boards are worn, gently rubbed at corners and spine ends, faded with gilding dull, and a few marks on the rear panel. Internally the leaves are a little toned, and some cracking around staples. The cigarette cards, which are bright and crisp, have been neatly pasted onto the album leaves. A very nice set in their original album – please note No. 7 from the series is not present.
The introduction in the album reads “This interesting set of … illustrations (in colour) of Historic Places from the Famous and Classic Works of the great novelist, Charles Dickens, is unique and truly forms a link with the past”. Cards and album issued by the Spinet House (R &J Hill), a London tobacco company which is thought to have begun manufacturing cigarettes around 1890. It issued its set of Charles Dickens cigarette cards in 1926 and again in 1934 but it is not clear which issue this album dates from.
