First (and only) edition, first printing.  viii, 286, 14pp.  Reddish-brown buckram cloth boards with gilt motif and blind rules on upper panel, gilt lettering on spine.  8vo.  Cloth is worn and rubbed; chipped and rounded and corners and spine ends, with some minor indentations on edges, spine sunned obscuring titles.  Label on spine. Text block edges dust darkened.  Previous owner’s name neatly inked on the front free endpaper.  Internally some minor signs of handling else neat and clean.  Firmly bound and robust.  

John Chessel Buckler was the chief architect for Lincoln Cathedral in the mid 19th century.  This is his virulent and controversial  defence against his critics for the repair and restoration work undertaken at the Minster, as well as an exploration of the contemporary state of architectural restoration work  om religious buildings.
