First UK edition, first printing. 83pp, with black and white plate frontispiece and monochrome photographic illustrations in text. Green cloth-covered boards with black titles on the spine. 12mo. Cloth a little faded in margins and over spine, lightly rounded at corners and spine ends. A little spotted on endpapers else internally neat. clean, bright and tight. Prize presentation plate, indicating the volume was awarded to Jane MacFarlane for Tennis Improvement in 1954, loosely laid in.

Maureen Connolly was an American tennis player, the first women to win a Grand Slam and the only player in history to win a title without l losing a set at all four major tennis championships. Shortly after this book, in which she records how she learnt to play and sets out her experiences for her Grand Slam season, she suffered a horse riding accident which ended her tennis career at the age of 19 – just two weeks after winning her third Wimbledon title.
