John Martin was one of the most popular English artists of the early Victorian era, best known for his sweeping and tumultuous Biblical scenes.  His name became a byword for the grandiose melodrama and Gothic romanticism so popular in the first half of the 19th cetury.  Using recently discovered source materials, Johnstone has carefully analysed Martin’s career as a painter and engraver.  Over 80 of his compositions are illustrated and annotated, making this an important study of the prolific artist.
