The Shropshire village of Myddle is the best documented rural community of the Tudor and Stuart period. In 1701 Richard Gough, a local resident, wrote a detailed history of the families in his community; that unique work is supplemented in this study by drawing on a wide range of other sources, including some unusually informative parish records and manorial surveys. The result is one of the most detailed historical studies ever made of a pre-industrial community.
