Edward Hasted – a curious man who later in life abandoned his wife and fled to France with another women and who spent some of his later life in a debtors’ prison – was an antiquarian and pioneering historian of his home county of Kent. His History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent was first published in four volumes between 1778 and 1799. The extensively revised and enlarged second edition was published in 12 volumes between 1797 and 1801. This is a recent facsimile reproduction of the fourth volume of that second edition, covering areas such as the hundred of Hoo, Alhallows, Chatam, Rochester, Gillingham, Maidstone, Boxley, Ditton and Malling.
