[1936].  First edition, first impression.  114pp, with plate portrait frontispiece, further plate illustrations and line drawings in text.  Quarter bound in black cloth over over grey marbled paper boards, silver lettering on spine.  8vo.  Boards a little worn, rubbed at corners and spine ends, spine cloth slightly faded.  Upper text block edge dust darkened.  Slightly foxed on endpapers else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.

Smyth (1858-1944) was a composer – the first female composer to be recognised with a damehood – and suffragette who composed the anthem of the Women’s Social and Political Union, ‘The March of Women’.  Later in life she enjoyed a brief and passionate friendship with Virgina Woolf.  This is her compelling and grief-ridden reflection on her beloved dogs, written with warmth.  Hard to find title.
