Eighth impression. xxviii, 674pp, with monochrome plate frontispiece and three further monochrome plates.  In blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine.  Top edge gilt. 8vo.  Cloth a little worn and marked, pushed at spine tips. Gilding on top edge is dull.  A little tanning on endpapers.  Lengthy but lovely inscription inked onto front free endpaper else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.

Hugh Reginald Haweis (1838-1901) was primarily a clergyman and writer but fascinated my music and wrote books on bells and violins.  He is perhaps best remembered for Music and Morals, first punblished in 1871.  This volume provides a biographical review of his career and teachings and traces his musical journey and in particular his expert knowledge of Cremonese violin-makers and of composer Paganini etc.
