xx, 392pp, xxxii, with numerous black and white illustrations throughout, 32 plate illustrations and four large fold out plans and charts. In vivid green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Tall 4to. . Cloth very slightly worn, a little rounded at spine ends. Ex lending library with marking restricted to front and rear endpapers. A little smudging on text block edges. A tad loose, else neat, clean and bright. In its original worn and chapped dust jacket, minor loss at spine tips, various flat creases, call number on spine. Describes and records emergency excavations in 1953-5 around the Chew Valley reservoir, just south of Bristol. Discoveries included occasional Palaeolithic and Mesolithic finds as well as a Neolithic house, an EBA cremation grave, iron age timber buildings and a ditch system, a Roman timber farmhouse and ditches, a third century lime kiln and other industrial remains, a late Roman villa with its corn drier and a well. From medieval times there was a village (chapel, mill house, manor, cottages), lime kilns, a nunnery and a manor. Although held in a few libraries in the UK [WorldCat lists nine), this is now a very hard to find title.
