Claire Johnston was a British film theorist. Her 1973 Notes on Women’s Cinema is considered a landmark publication in feminist film theory, containing several foundational texts including Women’s Cinema as Counter Cinema of critique of film Realism and Cinema Verite in feminist film-making. Instead of simply complaining about and observing how women film-makers and directors were treated, Johnston set out a theoretical blueprint challenging how films where shot, edited and funded which heavily influenced filmmakers through the 1970s and 1980s. Intended as transitionary pamphlet, and cheaply produced on a small print run, there are few surviving copies.
