First thus, first impression.  246pp.  Red cloth-covered boards, gilt titles on spine.  8vo.  Cloth is worn and rubbed, with some minor cracking at the base of a lightly sunned spine.  Text block edges, endpapers and page margins a little toned.  Previous owner’s name neatly inked on the front free endpaper. A few minor signs of handling internally.

A fine translation of Mikhail Lermontov’s A Hero of Our Time, widely regarded as the first major psychological thriller in Russian literature.   First translated into English in 1853 (and, much later by Vladimir Nabokov) under the title Sketches of Life in the Caucasus, by a Russe, it is structured as five interconnected stories revolving around the same main character, Grigory Pechorin.  This edition features a foreword by Prince Mirsky one of the finest Russian literary historians.  Merton’s translation is often considered the most readable and flowing available, as Merton prioritised turning the Russian into natural, elegant English.
