Captain Joshua Slocum was the first person to sail around the world single-handedly.  Sailing Alone Around the World chronicles his journey from 1895-1898 in this rebuilt wooden oyster sloop, The Spray.  Voyages of the Liberdade recounts an earlier adventure when Slocum lost his ship off the coast of South America and, using salvaged wreckage and hand-hewn timbers, he built a little craft by hand in which he and his wife and young sons sailed over 5000 miles to get home.
