The Saint in New York

First Triangle Books edition, first printing (first published in book form by Hodder and Stoughton in 1935; a short version of the novel appeared in The American Magazine in 1934). 302pp.  Blue cloth-covered boards, titles in green relief on spine.  8vo.  Cloth perhaps a tad faded, gently rounded at spine ends with a tiny nick at the head of the spine.  Text block edges and page faces tanned.  Previous owner’s neat stamp on the front paste down and name neatly inked on the front free endpaper.   In its original illustrated dust jacket, shelf worn, and somewhat rubbed, chipped and nicked around edges and folds with some visible shelf wear on the rear panel. Dust wrapper now protected in a Brodart-style sleeve, fitted without the use of tape or adhesives.

A now very hard to find vintage edition of this classic in ‘The Saint’ series, the first set wholly in America following Leslie Charteris’ relocation from the UK to the USA, it introduces Inspector Fernack into Simon Templar’s adventures.  The American setting hit well with the US audience and the novel became Charteris’ first major best-seller, establishing his literary reputation both in the US and the UK where it also sold well.
