Compiled under the direction of Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice. Volume I only. xviii, [2], 526pp. Blue grain-embossed cloth binding with gold-blocked lettering front and title. Top edge gilt. Large 8vo. Cloth worn and marked, rubbed to to fraying on corners and spine ends, rubbed on spine joints, backstrip faded dulling spine lettering. Gilding on upper text block edge tarnished and dull. Previous owner’s name and date (1909) neatly inked on the front paste down; and another neatly pencilled on the front free endpaper. Small bookseller’s ticket on front paste down (Adams & Co of Durban). Various previous bookseller’s annotations lightly pencilled on front endpapers. Endpapers a little spotted and toned, with faint toning affecting also the first and last few pages. Occasional chips and very short closed tears to page edges, else internally neat and clean. Tightly bound.
