First edition, probably second printing, in a second state dust wrapper. 246pp. Quarter bound in green paper-covered boards under green cloth spine, with gilt and green metallic lettering front and spine. Deckled edges. 8vo. Boards a little faded on extreme edges, cloth gently rounded at spine tips. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original, second state dust wrapper, very slightly chipped at spine base. Dust jacket now protected in an archival quality Brodart-style wrapper fitted without the use of tape or adhesives.
The volume contains a complete Random House number line (9-2) for a first edition, but does not state first edition (as a true first does). Dust wrapper shows a price of $7.95 (true first was $5.95). A very pleasing, fresh and crisp copy John Irving’s third novel: his next novel was The World According to Garp, with which he sealed his reputation as a contender to be the author of ‘the great American novel’.
